70s/80s hav-a-hank pink paisley cotton bandana - made in usa

a softly faded pink hav-a-hank bandana in the classic american paisley format, made in the usa in 100% cotton. the layout is the one most people picture when they picture a bandana: a scalloped medallion field at the center built around a small black starburst, surrounded by scattered paisley sprigs, with large curling boteh motifs anchoring the four corners and a fine looping border running the perimeter, all printed in charcoal and cream on pink. hav-a-hank has been making bandanas in the united states since 1946 and became one of the most widely distributed american bandana brands of the twentieth century, which is why their pieces turn up in so many workwear and western wardrobes. the corner mark reads rn 15187, the company's federal registered identification number. the current rn series did not begin until 1959, so that mark sets the earliest possible date for this piece. the paisley itself is much older than the brand. the teardrop motif descends from the persian and kashmiri buta, and took its english name from paisley, scotland, where the pattern was mass-woven in the nineteenth century before american mills adopted it as the default bandana print.

please note: the pink is soft and slightly mottled from age and washing, with the color sitting a little lighter through the center.
