an antique edwardian bertha collar, c. 1900-1910, worked in handmade tape lace on fine cotton muslin. tape lace, often called battenberg or princess lace, was made by shaping narrow machine-woven tape into scrolls and flowers, then joining the motifs with hand-stitched needle-lace fillings. it was one of the defining lace techniques of the turn of the century. this one is a full cape-scale format: a deep back panel edged in openwork, floral medallions scattered across the muslin ground, and long tapering lappets that fall down the front. dramatic worn over a plain dress or knit, and just as good flat on a wall.
please note: allover soft tea toning consistent with age, visible in the photos. collar has been gently cleaned.
